We object to the application by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) for a 300-bed cancer hospital in Boston. This project will have a significantly negative impact on community hospitals throughout the state.
Dear Members of the Public Health Council:
I am writing to urge you to deny the application by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) for a 300-bed cancer hospital in Boston. This project will have a significantly negative impact on community hospitals throughout the state.
As you know, community hospitals serve as the first point of care for cancer patients. This new DFCI cancer hospital could divert patients who might otherwise have been treated at these facilities, leading to a loss of revenue for smaller, local institutions that rely on oncology services to sustain their operations.
In addition, centralizing care in Boston creates access barriers for patients in suburban, rural, and underserved areas who cannot easily travel to the Longwood Medical Area. This especially affects those who rely on local hospitals for convenience or due to financial and logistical constraints.
Therefore, we strongly urge you to oppose this project in order to preserve health equity for all Massachusetts residents and protect our most vulnerable patients. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
